What the hex? Trend takeaways for your home’s interior

When it comes to the landscape, northern and southern Utah are vastly different. Multicolored mountains versus rusty red plateaus. Pine trees versus palm trees. Granite boulders versus lava rock. These exterior elements influence the interior design in both locations, often making the color palettes and decor choices distinct in the two locations.

Still, many of the homes on display during the 2022 Northern Wasatch Parade of Homes (held in July) and the 2023 St. George Area Parade of Homes (held in February) had several similarities. Those who are considering building a home in one of Utah’s planned communities flock to the annual events to draw inspo and connect with industry pros. But even if you aren’t ready to build your own custom home, you can incorporate some of these design trends into your current abode to make it more like a model home.

He says hexagon, she says honeycomb

Whatever you prefer to call it, variations of this six-sided shape — and its eight-sided counterpart, the octagon — were everywhere. It’s most frequently found in bathrooms. Think floor tile, shower walls and/or vanity mirror. The honeycomb pattern was usually small or midsize on the floor, but more substantial on the wall tile. While some were homogeneous in color, others sporadically mixed darker accent tiles with lighter tiles to add visual interest.

Outside of the bathroom, hexagon side tables were spotted in place of traditional nightstands in owner suites. Accent walls throughout the homes sometimes wore wallpaper with geometric patterns as well.

Back in (matte) black

Take your interior from builder grade to grade A simply by swapping dated door knobs out with matte black handles and hinges. Square plates with a straight lever offer the most modern look, while those with a round plate and straight lever are more transitional. Several Parade homes had translucent door knobs mounted on square black plates, which exude understated elegance.

Banquettes (with a Q)

No, this trend is not referring to pantries stocked with the skinny loaf of bread you see sticking out of every grocery bag in every rom-com ever. That’s a baguette. A banquette refers to a style of seating around a table — whether in a dining room, game room or home theater — that incorporates a padded/upholstered bench and freestanding chairs. The bench is typically an L-shape so it fits in a corner, but can also be curved. This comfortable design trend brings flex to furniture frequently used for things besides meals.
